Patient Engagement
The involvement of patients in discussing issues and in the sharing of decision-making is widely recognized as a more effective way to deliver healthcare services. Research shows that patient-centred care, with its focus on patient preference and experience, is a key component of quality. CHSRF’s work in patient engagement supports activities that engage patients in the design, delivery and evaluation of health services, with the goal of improving the quality of care.
Patient Engagement Projects
CHSRF’s patient engagement projects (PEP) initiative supports project teams led by decision-makers from healthcare organizations. Projects funded through the initiative aim to improve the quality of care, effectiveness and efficiency of health services by engaging patients in their design, delivery and evaluation. Each team undertakes an evaluation of their intervention’s patient engagement processes, outputs and outcomes, including its impact on the quality of patient-centred care services.
Funded teams also participate in workshops coordinated and supported by CHSRF. Over the course of the two-year project period, teams are brought together a minimum of three times to learn from one another and from key experts. One of these 2011 learning events was sponsored by the Health Council of Canada.
The 2012 workshops and knowledge exchange activities are funded through the generous support of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer.
Support to facilitate networking, resource sharing and the exchange of ideas to help improve patient engagement strategies is available between sessions. In addition, CHSRF provides mentoring on patient engagement, improvement methods, performance measurement and evaluation. Contact Mireille Brosseau for more information.

Canadian Partnership Against Cancer funds knowledge exchange activities
We are pleased to announce a new partnership with the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, who have agreed to fund knowledge exchange activities and a qualitative study to draw on lessons across the projects. This support allows CHSRF to go forward with the learning workshops for project teams to learn from one another and hear from key experts on patient and citizen engagement.
