Ingrid Sketris

Ingrid Sketris

Dr. Ingrid Sketris' chair focuses on managing drug use and policy research, and is based at Dalhousie University. Dr. Sketris is a professor at Dalhousie in the college of pharmacy and the schools of nursing, health services administration, and computer science. She is also an associate professor in the department of community health and epidemiology, and she is a research associate of the Initiative for Medication Management, Policy Analysis, Research & Training (IMPART). Her chair program is called Developing and Applying Drug Use Management Strategies and Policies for Nova Scotia's Provincial Drug Programs: a Partnership of Researchers, Healthcare Professionals, Consumers and Government.

The main objectives of Dr. Sketris' chair are to conduct research on managing drug use and policy that is relevant to decision makers, work with graduate and postdoctoral students interested in drug use management and policy, develop linkages with policy makers, and mentor junior faculty and faculty new to health services research. While Dr. Sketris' efforts will be based on the Nova Scotia experience, her work will be transferable to other centres across Canada and internationally.

Dr. Sketris developed a 17-week residency program in managing drug use and policy research. This interdisciplinary program focuses on promoting the use of research in decision-making by helping researchers understand the needs of decision makers. Dr. Sketris' program draws participants with varying skill sets. So far, eight residents have completed the residency, and six are in progress. Five faculty members and nine preceptors from both the Nova Scotia Department of Health and the Capital District Health Authority participated. She also developed a directed studies course in drug policy and use management, which is offered through the health services administration program, and she produced a mentoring resource book that provides information on mentoring and ideas for structuring the mentoring process.

Dr. Sketris' work is done with the Nova Scotia Department of Health, and her chair is co-sponsored by the Nova Scotia Health Services Research Foundation.
